Children's Choir Repertoire Creation

Building Your Music Repertoire for a Children's Choir

Building a child's choral arrangement is easy unless you're on a tight budget and song selection is limited. Here are some resources for great choral music selection that any elementary chorus will treasure.

Children's choir song collections

It may seem like a daunting task but there are choral series that can save you time and money on the market. Here are some of the resources.

#1 Plank Road Publishing's Music K-8 Magazine

Music K-8

This is a great resource for coral warm-ups, classroom activities and teacher tips.

It can be used for choral performances as the magazine has five issues one every two months of the school year and you can order the accompanying CDs with them. They include full performance and lyrics that are great for students to practice at home and in rehearsal as well as concerts.

Each issue has holiday or theme songs that are reproducible for any vocal setting. The cost of a one-year subscription is $50 and when the CDs come you will need to pay $100. It's worth the material and the songs as many students enjoy performing these particular songs.

#2 J W Pepper

This is a great resource for any music teacher. It includes a selection of vocal and choral music that is quite extensive. The music is in all genres and styles including seasonal pieces and you can print them digitally from their website. It is more costly than the magazine above but if you need a particular piece of music this is where you would find it.

#3 Sheet Music Plus

Music K-8

This is a large retailer of all types of sheet music including vocal music. There are cute selections for children's choir that are relatively inexpensive. Most pieces are two dollars per copy and one can get creative to make it work within a budget.

#4 Be aggressive and share in return

Oftentimes you can get your best pieces from other music teachers. Don't be afraid to ask and share in return. Networking is the best way to get ideas and material. You may also check your music library of a college as it may also have choral works to choose from.

Once you have gotten a well-established choral repertoire you're on your way to creating the perfect concert program.
